How to convert iTunes 8 protected AAC(M4P) music to MP3 with TuneClone

More than two months ago, I wrote a tutorial entitled How to convert DRM protected iTunes M4P music songs to MP3. In that post, I introduced two ways to convert iTunes M4P (protected AAC) music to MP3. With the release of Apple iTunes 8, the second method of converting iTunes M4P music to MP3 with TuneClone isn’t applicable. So, I’d like to post the step by step tutorial about how to convert iTunes 8 protected AAC or say M4P music to MP3 with TuneClone here:

1. Download TuneClone from http://www.tuneclone.com and install it.

TuneClone is fully compatible with Windows XP and Windows Vista. A virtual CD drive will be installed. This virtual CD-RW will be used to convert music files.

2. Make settings in TuneClone

Convert iTunes M4P to MP3 with TuneClone

Click the “Settings” button at TuneClone. In the pop-up window, you can specify the “output folder”, “output filenames”, “output format”, etc. for the output files.

Note: Apart from MP3, TuneClone also allows you to convert iTunes M4P to WAV and unprotected WMA.
Tip: You can get the output protection removed music folder by clicking the “Folder” button after the whole process.

3. Make settings in iTunes 8

Create a playlist, and then add the files you want to convert into the playlist.

After you have created the playlist ready to be burnt, click the “Burn Disc” in the bottom right of iTunes.

In the pop up window of “Burn Settings”, make the settings as highlighted below:

4. Start to burn

Click the “Burn” button to start burning.

After the burning gets started, TuneClone will automatically convert the music file to MP3, WMA or WAV. You can open the manager screen to show all the converted music files.

The most important step is to choose the CD burner. Then the software can convert the music files automatically. It is exceedingly easy when you want to batch convert lots of files.

    Greg,

Did you see the “Burn Disc” button after creating a new playlist?

Select the new playlist, click the “Burn Disc” button and window of “Burn Settings” should pop up after several seconds.

    Please try again.

Yes, I did see it and I did click on it. A window pops up with “Burn Settings” in the title bar. It shows my CD burner as my internal R/W drive, but there is no way to change it from the internal drive. Next line on the window is “burn speed,” that does have a drop down. But the burn disk line (first line in the window) has no drop down menu, etc. I am using Vista – does that make a difference? Have itunes 8.0.1.11

PS: My pop up looks just like the one above (Colors are different because of Vista), but no drop down for the CD burner.

I am guessing this is a “fix” that Apple put in 8.01.11.

Great Post, however, step 4 doesn’t seem to working for me.
When I’ve done everything else right, but I don’t have the option to click the manager button to see the progress. Plus, when itunes is done, the files aren’t in the output folder.
    Any suggestions?

FairGame doesn’t work w/iMovie 08 or iTunes 8 – I’ve tried. Can SOMEONE get word to the developer that it needs some tweaking? Noteburner works, but, it’s 35 bucks.

It works for me, but all the songs get shortened down to 3 minutes because it’s a trial version. Is there any way to get around this without buying/registering it?

I did everything according to the instructions and I went to itunes and burned a CD but I was stuck there. I retried it and still nothing. But when I went into my playlist that I put the songs into(itunes)I right clicked my mouse and found that the options for converting them to MP3’s was there! I clicked it and presto the songs were converted. That options was not available before the tuneclone download. So far so good… I hope this may help someone.

vista users will likely need to run the tuneclone program as administrator (by right clicking) to get it working properly

Can’t get it to work with Vista Home Basic and iTunes 8.1.1 — Menu options for Edit->Preferences->Advanced no longer allow selecting a CD burner. It was nice software while it lasted. . . .
